MR. CECIL RHODES IN PLASTER; ON WHICH MR. JOHN TWEED, THE SCULPTOR, IS SEEN WORKING (Left). This colossal statue of the Colossus of South Africa is the work of Mr. John Tweed, the brilliant young sculptor of Chelsea. It has been commissioned by the citizens of Bulawayo, and will stand in the market square of the town. It is 11 feet high, and will stand on a pedestal I4 fee! high, so that, allowing for the necessary optical illusion, which is far greater than most people would imagine, it will appear as nearly at possible life size when it is in its position. The marble replica of the head is given in the corner of the picture to show what the finished statue will really look like.

For the clay model sittings were given by Mr. Rhodes himself when he was over here during the sittings of the Jameson Raid Commission—sittings which the artist constantly attended for the purpose of studying his subject. It will be at least four or five months before the statue is ready to be cast, and will weigh in bronze about two tons. Then it will have to be shipped to South Africa, and may even have to wait until the completion of the railway before it can be delivered at its destination.
